Chuka, belonging to a backward caste, is among 12 off springs of her father Nanu Singh, residing in Muhami village of Ajmer district. At a tender age of 9 years, she was engaged in hard work of breaking stones with her father. She used to assist her father from dawn to dusk in torturing sun of desert. Instead of pen in her hands, she had a hammer.
The organisation's workers contacted her father to get her admitted to the Special Child Labour School being run in collaboration with Ajmer Child Labour Project Institution. The initial efforts did not succeed. But the workers contacted Chuka's parents again and mounted pressure on them through village elders. Ultimately luck proved to be on Chuka's side. She was freed from child labour and admitted to the school.
Chuka has not stopped hard work. The difference is that while earlier she used to work hard to break stones, now she studies equally harder in her studies. Because of her hard labour, she passed five classes in three years and became successful in seeking admission in Government Higher Secondary School in class 6. She not only passed sixth standard in first division but also obtained first position in the class.
She is at present studying in class 7. After completing her studies she intends to become teacher.
